FAQ
What are Global Investment Performance Standards (GIPS)?
In February 2005, the CFA (Chartered Financial Analyst) Centre worked with sponsors of GIPS, representing 25 countries, to develop the most comprehensive global performance reporting standards. KING's Financial Dictionary has a complete description of GIPS.
Who Benefits From GIPS and Why?
By choosing to comply with GIPS, investment management firms assure prospective clients that the historical “track record” they report is both complete and fairly presented. The Standards, which represent “best practice,” provide significant internal controls and are an important way for the firm to ensure accurate and consistent investment performance data.
Prospective clients have a greater level of confidence in the integrity of performance presentations, and can more easily compare performance presentations among different investment management firms.
Why is Firm-Wide Verification Important?
The primary purpose of verification is to establish that a firm claiming compliance with GIPS has adhered to the Standards. Verification is the review of an investment management firm’s processes and procedures by an independent third party for compliance with GIPS.
The GIPS Executive Committee develops and maintains the Standards, but does not conduct verification or “audit” of a firm’s claim. Rather, an industry of verification specialists – including the biggest accounting firms – has emerged in recent years to meet the need for third-party verification.
KING adheres to GIPS and verifies the information presented; a standard of practice which we believe strengthens the lasting relationship of trust and confidence offered to our clients.
